Graduate reflects on ‘exceptional’ YGN Annual Seminar
After a successful day at the Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network’s Annual Seminar and Dinner, NDA group graduate Akshay Srivats Venkataramana shared his insight into his day and what it included.
“The YGN Annual seminar was an incredible event, bringing together industry professionals to share invaluable insights into the current state of the nuclear sector. The event highlighted ongoing challenges and provided a compelling vision for the future work required in the field. The event was held in Edinburgh this year in collaboration with the Rock trust.
The seminar opened with a presentation by Simon Bowen, Chair for Great British Energy – Nuclear. Bowen’s presentation, titled “Setting the nuclear scene”, offered a comprehensive overview of recent developments in the industry and established the central theme for the remainder of the event – the advent of the nuclear renaissance.
Next, Reuben Bouchard-Saunders, winner of the YGN speaking competition, delivered a captivating and thought-provoking presentation on the complex emotions experienced surrounding the word nuclear.
Reuben’s presentation highlighted the persistent misinformation surrounding nuclear energy and how this has fuelled a fear of the unknown. This apprehension has led to the emergence of several anti-nuclear groups that aim to impede progress within the sector. He argued that such claims are largely unfounded and stem from misunderstanding. With effective education, he suggested, we can dispel these misconceptions and realise the essential role of nuclear energy. As he eloquently put it - “the atom does not care how you feel”.
Following this were two separate panels: one led by Alanna Downing, focusing on the importance of equality, diversity, and inclusivity within the sector; and another by Jake Moorman, exploring an international nuclear vision. Both panels offered a comprehensive perspective on the work required to progress the nuclear sector and to create an equitable environment for people of all backgrounds and experiences.
The seminar featured several more memorable moments, including, Fran Wilkin, a former Olympian, shared insights into how the discipline and mindset she developed during her Olympic training contributed to her success as a business manager at Babcock. Dr. James Cowan delivered an engaging presentation on the STEP programme, highlighting the future of commercial fusion technology in the UK. Finally, Andrew Sherry, Professor of Material and Structure at the University of Manchester, offered an insightful perspective on the importance of emotional intelligence as a key trait for effective leadership.
Overall, I am deeply grateful to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Energus for giving me the opportunity to attend this seminar. Hosted by YGN, the event was exceptional - providing graduates with a unique chance to network, learn, and grow in an environment designed to foster professional development and personal growth.”
