Inside the NDA group graduate programme: Will Temple's journey so far

The newest cohort of graduates have started their journey on the NDA group graduate programme, which is an exciting time for them as they settle into their new roles. First year HR graduate, Will Temple, who is currently seconded to the NDA, has shared a personal account of his first few weeks on programme.

“When I first stepped into the office as a new HR Graduate, I had no previous experience in a professional environment. I genuinely didn’t know what to expect or how I’d fit in with colleagues. The idea of transitioning from university life to a more formal office setting was both exciting and daunting.

But from day one, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. In fact, I’m loving every moment of it.

The office itself is a fantastic place to work. The facilities are brilliant, with a modern, comfortable environment, designed to support productivity and wellbeing. More importantly, the staff are incredibly helpful and friendly. There’s a real sense of community here, and that’s made all the difference in helping me settle in quickly.

My introduction to the role has been nothing short of ideal. I was given the opportunity to dive straight in, at my own discretion, which allowed me to learn quickly and gain confidence. This approach was balanced with extensive support from the Energus team, my line manager Andy Aston, and my colleagues. It’s been the perfect blend of challenge and guidance, and I couldn’t have asked for a better start.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my experience so far has been the opportunity to work alongside individuals with extensive experience, not just within the NDA, but across the wider industry. Their insights and mentorship have been invaluable, and I’ve already seen a noticeable improvement in my personal development and skill set.

As I’ve grown into the role, I’ve also developed a genuine interest in learning about the different aspects of the nuclear industry. Given that prior to this role I had very limited knowledge of the industry, this has been a very enjoyable aspect of the scheme. What’s struck me most is the level of collaboration across sectors, civil and defence alike, which makes the industry both extremely complex and unique. With the support of my colleagues and the extensive material provided by my knowledgeable line manager, I’ve been able to explore the industry’s structures, its challenges, and its future direction. This learning journey has opened my eyes to the scale and significance of the work being done, and it’s deepened my appreciation for the sector as a whole.

A particular highlight of my experience so far was attending the Young Generation Network (YGN) event in Edinburgh. It was brilliantly organised and created a space where all graduates could genuinely enjoy themselves while also connecting with others across the industry from a variety of roles. It was a fantastic opportunity to socialise, share experiences, and extend our support networks, something that’s so important in the early stages of our careers.

Reflecting on how far I’ve already come, it’s incredible to think that just a few weeks ago I was starting this graduate scheme, relocating away from home and facing a huge personal change. The uncertainty I felt at the beginning has been replaced with a real sense of belonging and purpose. I’m now looking forward to continuing my development, exploring the HR function in greater depth, both in my current work and rotating through different projects to broaden my experience and make the most of the opportunities that the NDA group offers.”
